Temple-Wilton Community Farm

Yggdrasil's relationship with the Temple-Wilton Community Farm (TWCF) and its land holding entity, the Educational Community Farm, is distinguished from its other relationships in that Yggdrasil Land Foundation serves as a charitable ownership vehicle and as a holder of land for public benefit. Yggdrasil’s ownership relieved the farmers of the challenges of becoming a federal charitable corporation. Use of this model allows the land to be protected in perpetuity for this community farm’s use and frees the farmers to operate on the land without capital indebtedness. In 2002 the Temple-Wilton Community Farm raised funds for Yggdrasil, matched by the State of New Hampshire, to purchase a 50 acre tract of land on Abbot Hill in Wilton, New Hampshire. The land is now leased long-term to the community farm. In addition Yggdrasil has acquired another 36.8 acres through generous donations from two of the TWCF’s founding farmers.

The Temple-Wilton Community Farm is the oldest continually operating Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in the US. TWCF started in 1986, with three farmer families and a group of local individuals wishing to establish and maintain a biodynamic farm to serve the needs of the community. TWCF now provides a broad range of products, such as milk, yogurt, artisan cheese, meat, and eggs for over 100 households a year. The farm has milking cows, calves and heifers, sheep, pigs, and chickens for eggs and pastured poultry. Additionally, the farm provides biodynamic vegetables for its members year-round.

Yggdrasil’s New Hampshire properties are further protected either through conservation easements or permanent deed restrictions through the New Hampshire Land & Community Heritage Investment Program. To learn more about TWCF’s product and produce lists, membership, farm philosophy, events, apprenticeships and more, please visit their website:  twcfarm.com.

At present the Educational Community Farm holds a 99-year renewable lease with an annual lease payment and stewardship pledge to support Yggdrasil’s work.
